Title A morphological historical root dictionary for Portuguese
Abstract The project of a Morphological Historical Root Dictionary (MHRD) for Portuguese aims to build a specialized dictionary containing a critical selection of lexical units: the first stage is devoted to adjectives, namely those that can be found in Figueiredo (1913). Its main goals are the clarification of morphological and semantic issues in the evolution of the lexicon, and the assessment of the communicative adequacy of the words that are registered in current Portuguese dictionaries, particularly by signaling unused or seldom used words. The methodology we established is three-sided: it first relies on the lexical analysis of the selected words; then, it seeks for lexicographic information in old Portuguese dictionaries (16th to 19th centuries), in Portuguese textual corpora and in etymological dictionaries; finally, it contrasts the Portuguese data with data from other romance languages, searching for lexical and semantic loans. To conclude, we propose a prototype dictionary entry, applying the above-described methodology to the adjective bravo.
