Title Developing a Lexicon for a New French Spell-Checker
Abstract This paper describes some of the problems the lexicographer was faced with when developing the lexicon for a new French spell-checker which shipped in the Microsoft Office 2003 Service Pack 2 in 2005. The new functionalities of this spell-checker are described, focusing on the implementation of the French spelling reform recommended by linguistic authorities such as the French Academy. The impact of these functionalities on the structure and content of the underlying speller dictionary is discussed. It is also shown that many of the decisions that are made during the design phase about issues like tokenization and word-breaking influence the contents of the dictionary as well as the performance of the speller.
