Title Electronic Corpora and Dictionary Definitions: the Word “Patriotism” in COCA and Online Merriam-Webster Dictionary
Abstract The article analyses the word ‘patriotism’ in the Contemporary Corpus of American English (COCA) and the results are compared with the definition of the same word in the Online Merriam-Webster Dictionary. The comparison points out that one of the most comprehensive dictionaries of American English does not provide a consistent and clear structure of the senses of the word ‘patriotism’ as it is used today. Some suggestions for the improvement of the definition are offered.
