Title Fixed expressions, idioms and phraseology in recent English learner’s dictionaries
Abstract The paper briefly itemizes the kinds of phenomena which continue to bedevil learners of English in the broad area of phraseology. The general treatment of 'phraseological units' in three learner's dictionaries (LDOCE2, OALD 4, COBUILD) is analyzed. The scope of the dictionaries is assessed by means of a check of 125 items and the results are discussed and compared. A final section draws some tentative conclusions concerning the user-friendliness of the dictionaries and possible changes.
