Title I traducenti di voci verbali greche ed il problema della perfettività
Abstract The aim of this paper is to determine the relevance of telic/atelic opposition in verbal lemmas in Ancient Greek-Italian dictionaries. The two most important and authoritative Greek-Italian dictionaries are examined, i.e. the Vocabolario Greco-Italiano (last edition Rome 1943) by L. Rocci and the Dizionario della Lingua Greca (last edition Turin 2002) by F. Montanari. In particular, the paper explores two verbal pairs: zào/biòo (to live) and baìno (to move)/badìzo (to walk), which present an opposition of telic value. The core of the matter is the lexical meaning of verbs and consideration is also given to temporal and aspectual opposition (present/perfect), being a relevant one in defining the nature of Greek verbs. Comparing the over mentioned dictionaries, this paper will show how the telic value of verbs is important in compiling dictionaries items and some discussion is given to which is the better strategy in lexical definition.
