Title What Lexicographers Do with Word Formation
Abstract In the past 50 years a relevant increase in the inclusion of word-formation data in Italian dictionaries has taken place. This development has proved very important to Italian users: in other words it has increased their linguistic awareness. Dictionary users are convinced to investigate WF mechanisms. What looking-up strategies are necessary in order to achieve this goal? This paper analyzes the development of the treatment of word-formation issues in Italian monolingual dictionaries published since the mid-1960s. A short profile of the dictionaries analysed will introduce the topic. The paper aims to find the different selections of affixes and components listed as headwords in the dictionaries analysed and the selections of items included in each entry (neologisms or 'traditional' words), in order to compare the different lexicographical techniques used.
