The Seminar will focus on the lexis of the languages represented in the PRIN project (Italian, English, French and Spanish) and on aspects of variability, compositionality and creativity, which make lexis an area strongly affected by variation between norm and usage. In the title of the seminar the polysemous verb ‘to observe’ is used both in the sense of ‘analyse’ and ‘investigate’, on the one hand, and ‘respect’ (norm and usage), on the other. It will cover two thematic areas, explored from a synchronic perspective: lexis in dictionaries and lexis in the media. The distance between these two apparently separate poles does not exclude analyses which compare these two ‘loci’ where lexis comes to life and regenerates.

300 word abstracts in any of the Seminar languages (Italian, English, French, Spanish) should be e-mailed to Virginia Pulcini and to Stefania Nuccorini by November 15th
