AbstractThere has been an increasing interest in ontologies over the last years by the computer science. This interest can be attributed to the advent of what has been known as Semantic Web. Consequently, a persistent interest in Onomasiological Lexicography has arisen and several authors have written about the relation between thesaurus and ontologies, determined to build bridges between the two. The aim of this paper is to light up the discussion between the similarities and differences between onomasiological dictionaries and ontologies. It presents some definitions for concepts such as onomasiology, onomasiological dictionaries, ontologies, formal ontologies, linguistic ontologies. It also intends to demonstrate that the differences pointed out by some authors to distinguish onomasiological dictionaries from ontologies are not quite evident.
