Title Importance of the Issue of Partial Equivalence for Bilingual Lexicography and Language Teaching
Abstract The paper addresses the paramount importance of the issue of semantic equivalence of interlingual synonyms for various aspects of general linguistic, lexicological, and lexicographic research and related activities. Drawing on the studies conducted by prominent lexicologists and lexicographers, the authors highlight several aspects making the successful solution of the problem of semantic equivalence especially important: (a) the production of adequate, comprehensive bilingual dictionaries reflecting whole spectrum of semantic fields of words included in their wordlists and thus bridging the divide between semantic systems of various languages; (b) the role of such dictionaries for successful acquisition of foreign languages; and (c) the role of dictionaries with maximum number of native equivalents of foreign headwords in their word-entries, for the preservation of lexical richness of languages and linguistic diversity in general. In the article the authors also describe the methods they have been using for several decades in order to interconnect the semantic systems of Georgian and English. The semantic asymmetry between these languages and different methods of its treatment are shown on the examples extracted from the Comprehensive English-Georgian Dictionary (CEGD).
