Abstract |
Etymological studies or the research of word origins is one of the most fruitful branch of Hungarian Linguistics, which has several reasons. The fact that me Hungarian wordstock is various and colourful (such as the history and cultural development ofHungarian people) is one of the most significant reasons. The etymological researches of the Hungarian wordstock resulted in numerous dictionaries. Two of these works are worth mentioning on international linguistic forums. In my lecture I will introduce A magyar nyelv torténeti-etimológiai szótára (Historical-Etymological Dictionary of Hungarian Language) (Vol. 1-3, 1967-1976), in addition I will discuss those more or less specific principles and methods of etymology, lexicography that are characteristic features ofthe new Etymologisches Wörterbuch des Ungarischen (Vol. 1-2, 1993-1995) by reason of some dictionary articles. |
