Abstract The Dictionary of Bavarian Dialects in Austria (WBÖ) is a scientific dictionary with a long tradition (1911 establishment of the nowadays Institut für Österreichische Dialekt- und Namenlexika; 1963ff. publication). Modern technologies are used to store the basic material and to compile, edit and use the dictionary (1993: project Database of Bavarian Dialects in Austria [DBO]; 2004 project WBÖ electronic edition). Digital media even influence the structure and conception of dialect dictionaries. The standard access is lexical. Mapping of language data has an old tradition in linguistic sciences, yet concerning dialect dictionaries maps usually play a secondary part (except of rebuilding onomasiological structure in maps of synonyms). WBÖ and DBÖ store systematically lexicographical or lexical information along with information about (geographical) extension. Using this information as foundation for geo-referencend dialect-data an interactive, digital map as primary access structure next to a lemma register could be established. A pilot project is presented.
