Title Heritage Dictionaries, Historical Corpora and other Sources: Essential And Negligible Information
Abstract Contemporary dictionaries are often the result of accumulating the contents of previous dictionaries, namely heritage or patrimonial dictionaries, which are those that set a landmark in the historical lexicography of a given language. This is certainly the case for European Portuguese dictionaries, which offer word lists containing words in usage as well as rarely used words, words that belong to other language variants and phonetic/orthographic and morphological alternates, being apparently unable to distinguish among relevant, puzzling, or simply useless information. If contemporary dictionaries were to be redesigned, should lexicographic ancestry be ignored, or should it be dealt with otherwise? The discussion on new lexicographic models is beyond the range of this paper, but any lexicographic innovation must be grounded in solid lexicological analyses that cannot ignore the consideration of heritage dictionaries and historical corpora. These sources provide a large quantity of information requiring specialized interpretation and critical trimming, which may nevertheless be insufficient to fully grasp a thorough knowledge of the related words. This paradox, which is the focus of the present work, will be addressed by advocating the need to adopt a lexicographic protocol that may help to select the right amount of information and combine it with identical information from other languages.
